The First Female ‘Doctor Who’ Will Be Paid the Same As the Male Doctors It looks like things will remain equal on the TARDIS, as new female Doctor on Doctor Who will be paid the same as the male Doctors before her, because on Gallifrey there’s no 79 cents to the $1 rubbish. In case you missed it, long running science fiction drama Doctor Who announced that, for the first time in its 54 year history, a woman would be taking on the lead role of the Doctor. Jodie Whittaker will take over from Peter Calpaldi as the 13th iteration of the Time Lord (or Time Lady, now) following the show’s Christmas special, something that we’re so desperately excited for. While we wished that Doctor Who was real life, we have to remember that it’s actually a TV show. And, as we know from previous examples, women on TV and in media (and in general, tbh) are often paid less than their male counterparts. However, it seems that this won’t be the case with Doctor Who. The Director General of the BBC, the British company that makes the show, has said that there will be “parity” between Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker. Basically, they’re going to get paid the same for the role! “Yes, there is parity for the same amount of work,” Director-General Tony Hall told The Evening Standard. “And I do think it is time for 13th Time Lord to be a woman. I watched my first Doctor Who in the Sixties, hiding behind the sofa. As a devoted Whovian, I’m incredibly excited.” While the BBC has recently come under fire for its upsetting pay divide between men and women, we’re glad that it seems they’re taking a step forward into the future (which is female, fyi), and that Jodie Whittaker will be getting paid just as much as the Doctors that have gone before her. Now we just can’t wait to see her in the TARDIS.
